January - Garnet

The name garnet comes from the Latin word for grain because of the similarity between its rounded crystals and pomegranate seeds. Garnet is the official birthstone for January and symbolizes protection, friendship, trust, devotion, and love. Garnet, a natural stone, is also said to protect the wearer while traveling.

Five of these – pyrope, almandine, spessartine, grossular, and andradite – are important as gems. Pyrope and almandine range from purple to red.
